Bone Marrow Transplant at Parkside Hospital Wimbledon

After all the initial tests and harvesting we admitted Anand in the hospital. Anand was advised to drink a lot of water for the next 2 days. All of us were very anxious and deeply troubled to know what would happen.
Everyday his blood tests were taken and results analyzed.

on 13th deche was administered the chemo drug melphalan, instead of 200 he was only given120,as his kidneys were effected and his creatine was about 1.7.

professor powels an amazing dr was monitoring him daily. We still did not know how Anand would take the transplant, anyway on  14 dec  anand was transplanted with his own bone marrow cells,The procedure is tedious with each bone marrow bag being thawed and then drawn in a syringe and then pushed into his IV..All 200000 cells were transplanted. ANAND was taking all this quite sportingly ever ready to do all that the doctor was telling him.
slowly his white blood cells count  started dropping it took around 3 to 4 days , he also developed fever and ulcers in the mouth , he was also administered immunosuppressant drugs and antibiotics.
We were always keeping our fingers crossed and hoped all would go well with him,he stopped eating which was worrying.... the doctor told me he has to take 2000 calories to get back his  strenght.....I had brought alot of ingredients of food from India, tried giving him butter milk, vegetable broth, anta halwa, idli, curd, chapati, etc.

All milk curd products that were given had to be pasteurised, and all food cooked had to be given fresh,it was
a herculean task everyday, alot of pain we all went through...slowly his counts strated improving and his ulcers reduced, his platelets kept dropping and hemoglobin dropped. We had to give blood transfusions and platelets nearly every second day.The relief was that  in england everything is available so this difficulty we did not face. Here in INDIA we need a donor to match.

anyway if the end result is good all is well, Anand was discharged from hospital on 29th November nearly 16days after the transplant, normally people take about 21 to 28  days depending on their condition. Professor Powels was happy with his recovery.

Anand was discharged from hospital, but we needed to stay back in England for another 2 weeks.
We came back to India around 18th of December.
