These are opposite and pinnate from medium to dark green in color. Color of young leaves is purplish to reddish. Petioles are short and leaves have asymmetric shape.

Neem leaves in the form of paste can be directly applied to skin. You can use the neem leaves for bathing in water. This cures the skin related problems.

Neem leaves are very good in treating chickenpox.

If you are diabetic and will consume neem leaves empty stomach in the morning then surely you can cure your diabetes.

An inflammation can be subsided with neem leaf paste.

RAW VEGETABLES VERSES COOKED INTERESTING FACT FOR CANCER


FICTION: Raw Veggies are Healthier than Cooked Ones

Do vegetables lose their nutritional value when heated?

FACT: Cooking is crucial to our diets. It helps us digest food without expending huge amounts of energy. It softens food, such as cellulose fiber and raw meat, that our small teeth, weak jaws and digestive systems aren't equipped to handle. And while we might hear from raw foodists that cooking kills vitamins and minerals in food (while also denaturing enzymes that aid digestion), it turns out raw vegetables are not always healthier.

A study published in The British Journal of Nutrition last year found that a group of 198 subjects who followed a strict raw food diet had normal levels of Vitamin A and relatively high levels of beta- carotene (an antioxidant found in dark green and yellow fruits and vegetables), but low levels of the antioxidant lycopene.

Lycopene is a red pigment found predominantly in tomatoes and other rosy fruits such as watermelon, pink guava, red bell pepper and papaya. Several studies conducted in recent years (at Harvard Medical School, among others) have linked high intake of lycopene with a lower risk of cancer and heart attacks. Rui Hai Liu, an associate professor of food science at Cornell University who has researched lycopene, says that it may be an even more potent antioxidant than vitamin C.

One 2002 study he did (published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry) found that cooking actually boosts the amount of lycopene in tomatoes. He tells ScientificAmerican.com that the level of one type of lycopene, cis-lycopene, in tomatoes rose 35 percent after he cooked them for 30 minutes at 190.4 degrees Fahrenheit (88 degrees Celsius). The reason, he says: the heat breaks down the plants' thick cell walls and aids the body's uptake of some nutrients that are bound to those cell walls.


Cooked carrots, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage, peppers and many other vegetables also supply more antioxidants, such as carotenoids and ferulic acid, to the body than they do when raw, Liu says. At least, that is, if they're boiled or steamed. A January 2008 report in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry said that boiling and steaming better preserves antioxidants, particularly carotenoid, in carrots, zucchini and broccoli, than frying, though boiling was deemed the best. The researchers studied the impact of the various cooking techniques on compounds such as carotenoids, ascorbic acid and polyphenols.

Deep fried foods are notorious sources of free radicals, caused by oil being continuously oxidized when it is heated at high temperatures. These radicals, which are highly reactive because they have at least one unpaired electron, can injure cells in the body. The antioxidants in the oil and the vegetables get used up during frying in stabilizing the cycle of oxidation.

Another study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2002 showed that cooking carrots increases their level of beta-carotene. Beta- carotene belongs to a group of antioxidant substances called carotenoids, which give fruits and vegetables their red, yellow, and orange colorings. The body converts beta- carotene into vitamin A, which plays an important role in vision, reproduction, bone growth and regulating the immune system.

The downside of cooking veggies, Liu says: it can destroy the vitamin C in them. He found that vitamin C levels declined by 10 percent in tomatoes cooked for two minutes—and 29 percent in tomatoes that were cooked for half an hour at 190.4 degrees F (88 degrees C). The reason is that Vitamin C, which is highly unstable, is easily degraded through oxidation, exposure to heat (it can increase the rate at which vitamin C reacts with oxygen in the air) and through cooking in water (it dissolves in water).

Liu notes, however, that the trade-off may be worth it since vitamin C is prevalent in far more fruits and vegetables than is lycopene. Among them: broccoli, oranges, cauliflower, kale and carrots. Besides, cooked vegetables retain some of their vitamin C content.

That said, research shows that some veggies, including broccoli, are healthier raw rather than cooked. According to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in November 2007, heat damages the enzyme myrosinase, which breaks down glucosinates (compounds derived from glucose and an amino acid) in broccoli into a compound known as sulforaphane.

Research published in the journal Carcinogenesis in December 2008 found that sulforaphane might block the proliferation of and kill precancerous cells. A 2002 study in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences also found that sulforaphane may help fight the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which causes ulcers and increases a person's risk of stomach cancer.

On the other hand, indole, an organic compound, is formed when certain plants, particularly cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, are cooked. According to research in The Journal of Nutrition in 2001, indole helps kill precancerous cells before they turn malignant. And while boiling carrots was found to increase carotenoid levels, another study found that it leads to a total loss of polyphenols, a group of chemicals found in raw carrots. Specific polyphenols have been shown to have antioxidant properties and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, according to a 2005 report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Comparing the healthfulness of raw and cooked food is complicated, and there are still many mysteries surrounding how the different molecules in plants interact with the human body. The bottom line, says Liu, is to eat your veggies and fruits no matter how they're prepared.

"We cook them so they taste better," Liu says. "If they taste better, we're more likely to eat them." And that's the whole idea.

POWER OF AUM HELPS US


Power of Aum

Transcending through time, space, race, caste or creed, the music of Aum flows through all barriers of age and culture. Made up of three Sanskrit letters, aa, au and ma, Aum or Om is believed to be the intrinsic sound of the Universe. It is a mantra and prayer in itself.

The Upanishads describe Om as the complete sound that encapsulates the entire range of sounds the human voice can make. It starts with A at the base of the throat, moves on to U with the tongue and the palate, and ends with M where the lips are closed and sound emanates through exhalation.


The Mandukya Upanishad is devoted to the explanation of this mystical cosmic syllable, which contains three phonemes, a (Vaishvanara), u (Hiranyagarbha) and m (Iswara), symbolising the beginning, duration and dissolution of the universe and the associated trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva).

Chanting of Om revitalises the body, soothes and empowers the mind and nourishes the soul. Om is considered the most powerful of all mantras, and is the beginning sound of all other mantras. Repetition of “Om” enables us to maintain mental and emotional calmness and overcome obstacles and difficulties. Sound has the ability to rearrange molecular structure and can be used to awaken and balance consciousness. We carry the universe’s primordial sound internally in our energy centers, also called Chakras or the vibrating core of our consciousness.

The syllable ‘A’ starts in our solar plexus center (Manipura Chakra), moves upward with the ‘U’ or ‘O’ sound in the heart and the throat center (Anahata and Vishuddha Chakras), and ends with the sound ‘M’ (mmmm), which vibrates the higher centers in the head (Ajna and Sahasrara Chakras).

As the sound progresses, we transcend physically, mentally and emotionally from the material outer world into the inner world. For optimum benefit, Om may be chanted daily 108 times or for 30 minutes with the first 10 minutes chanted aloud, next 10 minutes softly, and then mentally repeated, ears closed, for another 10 minutes. As per Indian tradition 1 stands for one higher Truth, 0 stands for completeness and 8 stands for eternal movement. 108 is also a divine number attached to 108 stages of the human journey.

Properties and Gayabano Effectiveness

I remember receiving an e-mail that soursop or guyabano is tens of thousands more potent than chemotherapy. Having just lost a friend this year due to cancer, I looked at the title and trashed the copy dismissing it as another one of those incredulous claims.

Then I met a biochemist from a reputable university who claims three personal encounters with the efficacy of the plant. She excitedly recounted to me — in between rounds of freshly roasted Bataan coffee from her plantation — that the latest case involved the local barangay captain who was diagnosed with cancer. My husband knows him. His family was advised to prepare for the worse as he was thought to have only six months to live. Waiting for the prospect of a costly surgery, the patient got depressed and was resigned that he will not survive this. Gina boosted his morale and gave the friendly advice of taking tea from the soursop bark and leaves.

Apparently, the barangay captain did just that. He drank the soursop tea as his water for three months. He felt better and better and when he had another scan not a single tumor was seen. He was declared cancer-free!

That, of course, became a celebrated miracle in this sleepy Bataan town. I am sure they are planting guyabano obsessively as more and more harvest the fruits, leaves and bark.

Gina mentioned that the barangay captain decided to give it a try when she mentioned that her mother was diagnosed with cysts in the liver. Instead of letting her undergo surgery at her mid-60s she decided to just take the soursop tea and papaya fruit everyday instead. She claims to be healed.
Another was the case of the nanny of her boss who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not having the funds for the surgery and treatment, she decided to go back to the province. Gina and her peers told her to take soursop tea. Six years had passed, and she is still alive and well.

If this is so true, why can’t more people benefit from it? Why don’t people know about it? According to Gina, a large pharmaceutical company in the US spent a lot of money for research on the soursop. They confirmed that it is a potent cancer cure and commissioned a group to formulate a drug that can clone the active ingredient of the soursop. She said this failed so the company — not having any means to patent their discovery — just shelved everything.

The Philippine Herbal Medicine Organization shared some views on their website: “Studies are underway by leading medical institutes, universities and pharmaceutical companies of the healing properties of guyabano against cancers. Initial findings show that certain compounds and chemicals extracted from guyabano leaves, seeds, fruit and bark appear to kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells remain unaffected.”

The information they shared should be enough for anyone to consider loving the fruit even if they are not cancer-stricken. The flesh of the fruit is high in carbohydrates and has considerable amounts of vitamins C, B1, B2, potassium and dietary fiber. We know the fruit as guyabano, but it is called graviola in Brazil and guanabana in Spain.

The organization outlined several medicinal uses for its poultice (warmed paste from pounding the leaves) and decoction (leaves boiled in water) such as to kill bedbugs and head lice, to reduce fever, to heal skin abrasions, to alleviate rheumatism and other skin infections, to prevent scarring of wounds, and as a wet compress for swollen feet and other inflammations. 

They also noted that pulverizing the seeds mixed with soap and water is an effective spray against caterpillars, armyworms and leafhoppers. In the Netherlands, leaves of the soursop are placed inside pillows or on the mattress to induce sleep due to its sedative and tranquilizing properties.

I am not sure if this is the original source of the e-mails I got, but one was forwarded to me from this website. They claim that “the soursop or guyabano is the fruit from the graviola tree that is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than chemo.” They have a disclaimer that says none of the claims have been approved and that the website merely presents information, pertinent aspects of which I lifted are here:
“Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may be possible to attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss. Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections. Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment. Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life.

“Extracts from the tree were shown to: Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer. The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than a commonly usedchemotherapeutic drug.
“The compound extracted from the graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells. It does not harm healthy cells. Various parts of the graviola tree — including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds — have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis.

“It turns out the drug company (that) invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the graviola tree’s most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the graviola so potent, they’d be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the company could protect its profits — or even make back the millions it poured into research.

“The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that graviola’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells. Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public.
“Since 1976, graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-blind clinicaltrials — the typical benchmark mainstream doctors and journals used to judge a treatment’s value — were ever initiated.

“A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at 10,000 times the potency of the commonly usedchemotherapy drug. The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched.

Of course, I discovered out soon that this website sells guyabano supplements. But I guess, here in the Philippines where the blessed fruit abounds, you can just eat the fruit, drink the juice or make a tea from boiling the leaves and bark if you believe any of the claims.
